Osmosis and Diffusion Day 1

Osmosis is a certain type of diffusion that only pertains to water molecules. The definition of diffusion is the movement of molecules through a semi-permeable membrane. The objective of the lab was to determine the molarity of the solutions. We created artificial cells using dialysis tubing and then placed them into different colored solutions with different molarities. By using the change in mass of the cells after sitting in the solution, we were able to determine the concentrations. After, we cut pieces of potato and used them as another source of determining molarity. Our group determined the higher the mass change the higher the molarity. This is due to the osmosis that occurs.
